
Last night I went to a meeting with my local council to discuss how we may be able to keep our community gym open. The answer seems to be to form a committee, assess the current business model and develop a marketing plan. With careful management and a strategically sound plan, we can then work towards becoming self-liquidating and therefore staying open. This isn’t the only meeting of this type that I’ve been to recently, with many formerly council run services now seeking new ways to operate in order to survive. Whilst it’s great to see communities empowered to run their cherished local services and to see the Big Society in action, I am beginning to wonder if too much pressure will ultimately fall on the good-will of already stretched community-minded people.
